A program built slowly, on purpose
Heritage Oaks is a family home in Ocala, Florida that happens to raise Golden Retrievers. The dogs are not inventory. They are the reason the house is arranged the way it is.
Our Story
Fifteen years of the same quiet work
We began in 2009 the way most thoughtful programs begin — with one dog and a mentor who was generous with her time and unsparing in her standards. She taught us to clear before we breed, to keep records we would be willing to show anyone, and to say no far more often than yes.
Seventeen years later that is still the whole method. We plan at most two litters a year. Our girls rest between litters and retire early, most of them into homes we have known for a decade. Every dog we have bred has a place to come back to, for any reason, for life.
We are not trying to be the largest program in Florida, and we have never advertised. Families find us through their veterinarian, their trainer, or a neighbor walking a dog they admired. That has been enough.
Milestones
How the program grew
- 2009
Our first female, Autumn, comes home. Two years of mentorship before her first litter.
- 2013
Full OFA and genetic clearance protocol adopted for every dog in the program.
- 2017
Move to the current property in Marion County — twelve acres, oaks and open pasture.
- 2021
Early neurological stimulation and structured socialization formalized for every litter.
- 2026
Over two hundred families, and a waiting list built almost entirely on referrals.
Health Testing
No dog is bred without OFA hips and elbows, a cardiologist evaluation, an ophthalmologist exam, and a complete genetic panel. Results are shared openly with every family.
Temperament
Temperament is inherited and shaped. We breed only from dogs who are steady with strangers, gentle with children, and resilient under novelty.
Structure
Sound movement, correct angulation and balanced proportion allow a dog to live comfortably into old age. We evaluate structure at eight weeks and track it for life.
Nutrition
Dams and puppies receive a species-appropriate diet formulated with our veterinarian. Puppies are weaned gradually onto the food they will go home eating.
Exercise & Enrichment
Our adults live on open acreage with daily work and rest. Puppies receive age-appropriate movement, problem-solving and novelty every single day.
Quality Over Quantity
We plan two litters a year at most. Our girls are given long rest between litters and retire early into homes we have known for years.
